Which type of packaging should I choose for storing potatoes?

When it comes to packaging potatoes, there are a few factors to consider. The main one is whether you’re storing them or transporting them to their final sales destination, either in the short or long term.

No matter what, it’s important to choose materials that are certified and suitable for food contact, in accordance with European Union regulations and directives.

So, what types of packaging are commonly used for potatoes?

There are a few options to choose from. Net bags, transparent woven bags with holes, jute bags, and ventilated big bags are all commonly used for packaging potatoes for storage.

But how do you know which one to choose for each use?

  • Mesh bags with drawstrings, dowels, or rolls (for automatic machines) are made of durable materials like polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP). This helps prevent tearing and damage during transport and storage. These mesh bags, which can be filled with 3, 5, 10, or more kilograms of potatoes, are often chosen for display in supermarkets and grocery stores. They allow air circulation, keeping the potatoes fresh and preventing moisture buildup. Plus, all HELLAGRO SA’s net bags are produced in accordance with EU directive 94/62/EC on heavy metal concentration and are suitable for food packaging.

  • Transparent polypropylene bags with holes are made from pure raw material and are known for their high transparency, which helps showcase the product. These bags are typically filled with 25 or 30 kg of potatoes and are selected for display in vegetable markets and grocery stores. The holes in the bags improve air circulation and help preserve the potatoes for a longer period without deterioration. Rest assured, HELLAGRO S.A.’s transparent potato sacks are certified and manufactured according to the strictest European technical standards.

  • JOOT3 jute bags are made from the plant product jute and are mainly used for exporting goods. If the product needs to travel for several days to reach its destination, it is important to store and transport it in dark conditions. Jute sacks fulfill this requirement by providing darkness, preventing the product from sprouting, and ensuring good ventilation to prevent rotting. Jute sacks are typically filled with either 15 or 25 kg of potatoes. They are manufactured under strict specifications and hold ISO certification, guaranteeing excellent quality.

  • HELLAGRO ventilated big bags are made of woven polypropylene cloth with vertical ventilation channels on each side. These bags are the perfect solution for transporting and storing potatoes in refrigerators for extended periods. They provide the necessary ventilation while protecting the potatoes from deterioration until they are packed in smaller containers for sale, according to the customer’s packaging specifications. These bags come with four loops and are open at the top, with an outlet valve at the bottom for controlled emptying.
